1. Simple And Cozy
When we decided which events to attend, and which towns and cool places to visit during our annual Tunedside On Tour, a unique concept for Romania caught our eye. We did not know much about BusStock & Shine, but while preparing for the tour, one of the organizers explained everything to us (thanks a lot, Simona!), and on our way we went, deep into the heart of the country, to see what the fuss was all about.
This creative and different event is actually so much more than a car show, and closer to a festival that celebrates a diverse community, where everyone is welcome, offering tons of stuff to do and see. Lots of special cars, camping area, food area, concerts, activities for kids, and many other attractions are available, in a cozy location, with friendly staff and cool things all around. Exactly like the people from this area and pertaining to the car community that was involved, this event was made to be simple, safe and fun.
2. Location, Location, Location
The first rule of real estate also applies to car-related events, and that’s a fact. A cool location will add to the event’s greatness and to the special feeling it should have. It’s one of the factors that differentiate an event from the rest of the bunch. And this year’s BusStock & Shine was located in an amazing setting, overlooking the city of Sibiu, while still providing plenty of space for the camping site.
Horses, fluffy and friendly doggos, lots of activities and safe spaces for kids, a breathtaking view and green grass all around, while still shielded by a tall treeline. Talk about your perfect location, and there you have it. The open space helped with overcrowding, while the food & drinks area allowed for socializaing to take place. And the community involved behind and in this event really knows how to get along, whether it was chilling with a beer in front of them, talking about cars, or taking part in all the fun activities the organizers had in store. If you haven’t seen a bunch of kids pulling a classic Dacia or a car part throwing contest, you’d better drop by next year, as fun is the main focus of all these never-seen-before competitions.
3. Cars, Campers & California Vibes
Now, getting dow to what the event was all about and what were the main attractions. First, let’s talk about the cars. Lots of classic vibes on the grass, lots of history on the showcase area. Old school Mercs were in the spotlight, as this part of the country has a special relationship with them, most likely because of the German heritage. The 8 Series which made its place between them was a treat to be admired, of course. Bimmer fan here, remember?
Some one-offs were also present, like american icons, a cool Skoda, a sleeper Volvo and a range of classic motorcycles. Plenty to go around, to everyone’s taste.
The camping site, however, was what everyone was attracted to. Old VW buses as far as they eyes could see, unique restored cars and projects, different styles from all the models that were present and a strong Californian vibe all around, that’s one of the main reasons why we chose to attend this amazing event. And it did not disappoint, not one bit. The care-free, hippie surf lifestyle was a recurring theme, so we’ve enjoyed every bit of it.
Beetles could also be found all over the place, hidden between grills and tents, filled with stories and memories. The love for the little VWs is a real thing and you could feel it across the whole camp site.
4. The Feelings That Remain
A lot can be told after four days of watching classic cars, eating fantastic grills, and enjoying an overall unique atmosphere, all while standing atop of a hill, over Sibiu. As planes went over our heads, ready to land close to the city, I stood and contemplated what this community is all about. Not just VW buses, not just hanging around with friends and having beers, but so much more.
It doesn’t matter if you show up in a mint-condition Benz from the 70s, or tailgate in a beat-up camp bus, everybody’s friendly and helpful, and everyone is here to enjoy a different lifestyle. We’ll most likely include this event in our Tunedside On Tour future editions, that’s for sure.
And seeing the many children who attended this event, one thing became certain in my mind: the culture will continue to move forward, because while educating the younger generations in regards to classic values, we put a timeless stamp on the cars and the community around them.
