1. Sunset Impressions
This year, we got invited to a quiet and cozy neighborhood, near the edge of town, away from all the traffic and the chaos, on a cool summer evening, to have a chat about cars (what else?) and to enjoy a crisp and colorful sunset. Seemed like a pretty interesting meeting, and since we rarely turn down an opportunity to make new friends and shoot some amazing cars, we packed our cameras and laptops and on our way we went.
The villas, the organized alleys, the perfect lawns, the forest nearby, the perfect family haven we see in movies or commercials, that’s how our arrival location looked like. After a walk to find the perfect spots for the session, we were greeted by our host, a kind and truly passionate car enthusiast, which we’re really glad we got the chance to meet. It was all nice and tidy and peaceful, until the garage door opened up and the start engine button was pushed.
2. What Goes Around…
Let me be clear right from the get-go, this will be a subjective-written material, seeing that I’m a huge McLaren fan (both on the streets, as well as in motorsport) and I believe that this brand means quite a lot to the automotive world. I mean, after all, we’re talking about a company that up until 2011 had produced only one single road car, and we all know that the F1 wasn’t exactly daily driver material. So, to come close to battling with the Italian behemoths, in less than a decade, that must mean something. I was soon going to learn what...
Upon gazing at the mighty 720S, I could only ponder on the question “How can this car be even better than it already is?”. I mean, it’s a 4-liter V8 with 710 hp, why would you want to change those figures? What type of twisted, speed freak would roll up their sleeves and get the performance to a higher level? But, as our discussion went on and the sun hid deeper under the horizon, I discovered that there was more than meets the eye in every aspect of this vehicle.
3. ...Comes Around
First of all, and the most important detail we’ll provide, is the engine remapping. Not less than 7 sessions (of various elements and aspects) were needed, to push the car slightly over 900 hp. Oh, and that makes quite a difference. Some numbers, to understand what has been achieved here: 3.5 seconds from 100 km/h to 200 km/h, top speed on the race track of 278.8 km/h, meaning this is the fastest street car in the country (on said racetrack). Not to forget, it also holds the record for the fastest lap around Motor Park Romania. Facts, not plain talking.
The 720S has been fitted with Kline Innovation exhaust and downpipe, wrapped in ceramic coating and ending in and carbon tips. We also have Gyro Disk brakes, wheel racing alignment with just a bit of camber and full-on Novitec springs for that right amount of stance.
Inside, there are McLaren P1 bucket carbon racing seats, a full MSO (McLaren Special Operations) track pack including: titanium rollbar, F1 telemetry with 3 cameras (front, back, cockpit), while on the outside, there’s a special paint, called Cosmos Black, which has been wrapped in PPF for better protection. I’ll just let the photos do the talking for the next part...
4. A Time To Play, A Time To Sleep
Unlike any project we’ve seen or covered here on Tunedside, this is by far the most daring and extreme. Taking an already mature sports-car, mingling with its motorsport pedigree and getting it to be better, takes a lot of courage, knowledge and good taste. But, the final result was worth it, as far as I’m concerned. There’s nothing I would change, the car is simply spectacular and the project will most likely be known throughout Europe in the following years.
After the sun had set, it was time to put the monster back in its lair. A cozy, simple garage, hidden on a suburb alley, where the 720S awaits new and new adventures. And as the garage door closed behind us, and the streets were once again quiet (apart from the children riding their bikes or playing basketball), after the engine roar ended, I could not take my mind off this unique car, on the drive home, knowing that the roar would never go off in my mind and in my heart, for a long time to come.
