1. Hidden Treasure
While chasing the best cars, stories, and events out there, once in a while we come across something amazing and unknown to the rest of the world. Whether it’s a rare automobile, an incredible tale, or a one-of-a-kind garage, this is one of the greatest pleasures, when conducting your business in the automotive area. The surprises and the spectacular past behind them.
Hidden in a cozy forest, far from the madness of Bucharest, we came across this very special garage, which specializes in a particular kind of tuning, namely in engine remapping and turbo enhancement. Whether you’re new to the car scene or have been around for the past two decades, you’re bound to have heard the “engine tuning” words at least once. Well, this is what we believe paradise for the performance aficionados would look like.
2. Simple Roots
After a warm welcome and a short tour of the facility, I got the chance to listen to the full story and find out how DIO Performance came to be. Cameras were flickering inside the garage and out, but my attention was focused on the mastermind behind this concept.
Hailing from a small village in the South of the country (actually, really close to my hometown, and we do love cars in the South), DIO’s creator had always had a passion for mechanics and technology. Starting humble, by taking apart his very own first scooter, in order to “make it go better and faster”, as his own words describe it, a romance between man and engineering began, and its course still goes on today, perhaps stronger than ever.
Born out of a pure passion for cars (especially German ones) and for what makes them tick, this small business grew into one of the most sophisticated tuning shops in Europe. Don’t let the fact that its exposure is not a very common one fool you, because what they produce is what should be the main focus here, and the quality and attention behind their services and products is one of the best we’ve ever seen.
3. Learn And Learn Some More
Setting up a small business was never enough, though. The owner took things a step further, and after successfully getting his engineering degree, he searched for the most complete and comprehensive knowledge around. Maybe this is why some of the former DIO employees are now superstars, working for some of the best engine software makers in Germany. The fact of the matter is that when it comes to designing and implementing these types of services, the learning curve never ends. Technology moves forward and so should be applying it, be it for everyday use or motorsport.
Investing in tools, in professional software testing machines, and in turbo enlargement machines, was just a natural step, which followed in the footprints of gaining knowledge. And a lot of people found this business, and drove through the forest, in order to optimize their track or daily cars and to benefit from the large array of performance offerings.
4. Motorsport Endeavors
Like all other people, who live to build projects, all out of a passion for cars, motorsport was only a normal episode in the lifelong series of DIO Performance. From building and successfully racing cars in the national divisions to preparing software for projects along with engineering students, the passion drove them to high results and left a well-known mark on the local scene.
While we were not allowed to see what their next racing projects will be, we did manage to get the promise, that, no matter what form the return to track will take, they will always push for number 1, no matter what. We’ll just have to wait and see what amazing creations they’ll come up with, and most likely, we’ll be around to cover them, when they’re ready to see the light of day.
5. What Lies Beneath
A lot of cool cars left the small shop in the forest, some ready for the open road, others ready for time attack contests. Also, some of these cars were personal projects, such as the 4-Series that we were allowed to enjoy from behind the wheel. 414 bhp, 750 Nm, all coming from a diesel engine, benefiting from a special treatment, which includes DIO Performance custom ECU remap, upgraded intercooler, rear muffler delete, and 3000-bar fuel pressure sensor, just to name a few. Needless to say, the performance is outstanding and we can clearly see why these people love diesel engines so much. Because TDI is still a thing and it will probably be, until the end of motorized times.
Ambitious projects are lurking on the horizon, such as taking down the big European names, on their own turf and with their own guns (M-car fans, hope you’re ready for what’s coming…). We can only hope that car shows will soon be available, so we can see who does it better. Anyway, we’ll surely do our best in covering future monsters that will wear the DIO badge.
Leaving their headquarters was not an easy thing, as I believe we could spend days in and days out, in the small lunch nook above the garage, where employees get together every day to discuss their projects and relax a bit, and still have things to talk about. For the car passionate people, it simply doesn’t get any better than this, and we’re looking forward to our next visit to the small garage near Bucharest, to see what new and amazing things will be born, from the long-lasting relationship between passion and technology. Because, apart from the engineering side of things, there’s another particular feeling that stands behind the projects they create. That crazy little thing called love.
